CM3 understands the evolving nature of the COVID-19 pandemic. Initially it was thought by medical professionals that transmission was mainly through surface contact (fomite transmission), and cleaning efficacy was a high priority for many of our clients. While the cleaning efficacy hasn’t changed, the research now suggests that the virus is mainly spread via aerosol transmission by respiratory droplets among people who are in close contact. That said, CM3 worked closely with municipalities to ensure public buildings that remained open were cleaned to the highest standards.
CM3 worked closely with municipalities to ensure public buildings that remained open were cleaned to the highest standards.
CM3 was part of a team that completed assessments of multiple public buildings. The project involved technical oversight to review current cleaning procedures and methodologies including cleaning products used. CM3 evaluated the cleaning efficacy by testing hundreds of surfaces using a luminometer and bio-luminance technology to identify and measure levels of adenosine triphosphate (ATP). ATP is an energy molecule found in all living plant, animal, and microbial cells. The detection of ATP on a surface can indicate the presence of biological contamination than may not otherwise be visible to the human eye. This is not new technology and is commonly used in food processing and packing facilities. It is also important to understand that this does not identify and test for COVID-19, it is a tool used to evaluate the effectiveness of cleaning and disinfection activities. Tests were performed in real-time, with results available in minutes.
CM3 used the results of the ATP testing to evaluate the current disinfection measures and procedures, and to provide recommendations for improvement. The results were also used to evaluate the use of specific cleaning products, and to ensure application was completed in accordance with manufacturer’s recommendations.
Ultimately, the project was used to develop a standard operating procedure to optimize cleaning and disinfection methods, as well as quality assurance and control in these public buildings.
